New Self

As previously mentioned 2 posts ago, I’ve been reading through Colossians.

It says a whole lot about dying to self, and I’ve always thought that those verses were awesome. Galatians 2:20 perfectly summarizes it: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Okay cool. So what does this mean?

In order to fully surrender our lives in submission to God, there must be a separation between our old self and our new self. Let’s classify the two:

Old self:

Seeks to glorify self. Self self self.

Wallows in sin.

Not accountable to anyone.

New self:

Seeks to glorify God

Cuts off sin (“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit” John 15:2; “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles” Heb. 12:1)

Runs the new race (“let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” Heb. 12:1)

Doesn’t look back on the old life

Tells others about transformation

So, friends, what’s stopping us from cutting off our sin and running to the Lord?

  • Human desires, sinful nature
  • The desire to stay in sin because it “feels good”
  • Earthly pleasure (“Earthly pleasure, all forsaken, take me Jesus take me now!”)
  • Stubbornness towards change

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty… Stop sinning! I’m preaching to the choir here. Many of us complain about “hypocritical Christians.” If you’re one of them, stop being lukewarm! Run to Jesus. Let Him restore you. Let Him change you. Let go, let God.
