Choosing the perfect location for your family portrait session isn’t the easiest. There’s a lot of pressure to choose a place that’s meaningful, beautiful, full of life and a reflection of your family. But no fear, here are the 10 best places to take family photos in Birmingham, AL! Tried and true, these are some of my absolute favourites, and I’m confident you and your family will love them too.
1. Chace Lake Park
Located near the intersection of Montgomery Highway and Lorna Road, Chace Lake Park has expansive grass, a walking trail, and a gorgeous lake that makes for the perfect backdrop!
2. Botanical Gardens
Always a classic! Botanical Gardens has acres of land and every corner has a different perspective. I never really tire of sessions here because with the combination of lush grass, seasonal flowers, little streams and segmented gardens. It’s one of Birmingham’s most prized pieces of land!
3. Samford University
I’m a little biased, but I believe it’s the most beautiful school in the Southeast… if not the nation. Samford’s Georgian architecture is unparalleled, and the Quad provides luscious greenery, quaint hideaways and stunning backdrops. And if you’re not an alumni or don’t have a personal connection to campus, don’t worry! There are plenty of locations that don’t scream “Samford.”
4. Morris Avenue
For a tastefully modern downtown vibe, choose Morris Avenue! The cobblestone street and historical buildings add plenty of charm, and the recent addition of Mercantile on Morris makes for a gorgeous, architectural background as well!
5. Altadena Valley Park
The abandoned Altadena Golf Course sat unused for years … and has now ben turned into a photographer’s paradise! Altadena Valley Park is now open to the public and is the perfect location for your next family session.
6. Crest Road
This overlook might just be the dreamiest spot in the whole city. And during golden hour? Don’t even get me started. If you’re asking me to vote, this spot wins every time.
7. Jemison Trail
When golden hour strikes, this place turns into a fairyland! With a stream running through the dense trees, you have endless options for stunning portraits here.
8. Pedestrian Bridge
One of my favourite spots downtown that really captures my love for the city of Birmingham! This location is for all the cool families in town (yes, that includes you!).
9. Grants Mill
The difference between this outdoor location and some of the others, its that Grants Mill is picture perfect all year long! In the Spring and Summer, it’s lush and green. In the Fall and Winter, the pine trees are abundant and the wild grass turns the perfect fall-shades of tan and brown!
10. Your Home!
You may forget about this location… But if you love the memories made inside your home, let’s document it!
